Understanding the New Age Group Matrix (NJ Youth Soccer)

Beginning with the 2026/2027 season, New Jersey Youth Soccer (NJYS)—in alignment with U.S. Soccer—will use an updated birth-year age group matrix for all players.

This means:

Players are grouped strictly by date of birth
The seasonal cutoff now runs from August 1 through July 31
This system replaces grade-based or calendar-year groupings

For the 2026/2027 seasonal year (August 1, 2026 – July 31, 2027), players will be placed into age groups based on where their birthdate falls within that window, as shown in the chart.

Age Group Birthdate Range

U16 August 1, 2010 – July 31, 2011
U15 August 1, 2011 – July 31, 2012
U14 August 1, 2012 – July 31, 2013
U13 August 1, 2013 – July 31, 2014
U12 August 1, 2014 – July 31, 2015
U11 August 1, 2015 – July 31, 2016
U10 August 1, 2016 – July 31, 2017
U9 August 1, 2017 – July 31, 2018
U8 August 1, 2018 – July 31, 2019
U7 August 1, 2019 – July 31, 2020

Why This Change Is Being Made

Creates national consistency across leagues and states
Aligns club, school-year transitions, and player development pathways
Supports long-term player development by keeping players with similar developmental peers
Matches standards used by U.S. Soccer–sanctioned competitions and programs

What This Means for WEFC Families

Your child’s age group may look different than in previous seasons

Some players may shift up or down one age group compared to past placement

Final team placement considers:

Birth year (per the matrix)
Player development and readiness
Roster balance and programming structure

WEFC staff will review placements carefully during ID Sessions and communicate clearly with families throughout the process.

If you are unsure which age group applies to your child under the new matrix, we encourage you to register and reach out—we’re happy to help clarify.

Bottom Line

This is a statewide and national change, not a WEFC-specific decision. Our goal is to implement it thoughtfully, transparently, and in the best interest of our players and community.

All players interested in the 2026/2027 Travel Program are asked to register for our ID Sessions, including current WEFC players. Registration is free and helps us plan appropriately for team placement, scheduling, and seasonal programming.

After registering, please email [email protected] so we can:

Share Winter ID Session dates for the 2026/2027 season
Confirm whether there are any available roster openings for Spring 2026, if applicable

Our travel program includes Fall and Spring league play, winter indoor training, and optional opportunities such as tournaments, supplemental training, and goalkeeper training. All teams are professionally trained, and year-round training is supported by our indoor turf facility in Fairfield.

Middle & High School (NCSA only) (Mandatory Parent Meeting)

Parent meeting will be required. We recognize that both middle school and high school programs provide playing opportunities, and we are prepared to structure our programming accordingly. Before finalizing these offerings, we need to assess participation.

To best support our players, we are considering the following options:

A modified fall schedule to accommodate middle school participation
A winter and full spring season for high school players returning after their school season
A potential delayed start until after the school season if there is sufficient interest
